Clean, safe water is fundamental to good health and our very survival. In this 4 hour course we will cover the common sources and types of contaminants that may find their way into your water supply.
In this course we will cover:
- Threat of waterborne disease
- Making water safe
- Common contaminants
- Building a slow-sand filtration system
- Maintaining existing filtration systems
- Various filtration systems
Looking at the ever expanding threat of waterborne disease and sickness we will show how to make your water safe, whether it is from a municipal source, a well, or a stream in an off-grid scenario. Discussions will include failures of municipal sources ranging from “Boil Water” directives to the ongoing crisis in Flint.
Our focus will then shift to the building of slow-sand filtration systems sized for the homestead and small communities. We have built these systems at the school and various communities in the USA and abroad. It is one of the simplest and most complete methods of filtering water from biological (and other) contaminants. The resources are relatively simple to acquire, anywhere in the world, and the concepts are simple and easy to implement.
We will cover the steps in detail from making your own activated charcoal to maintenance on a mature system and detailed walkthroughs of actual systems built by our program.
